The Genealogy of Yeshua
PART 1 - The Genealogy of Yeshua in the Book of Matthew
1) This is the way the New Testament begins, with the genealogy of
Yeshua (that's what Jesus was actually called, or something like
that; we only actually know his name in Greek, Iesus, pronounced
Ee-A-soos). This is the first chapter of the first book,
called Matthew (one of his 12 apostles).
2) The main claim of this genealogy, and of the book of Matthew, the
first book of the New Testament, is that Jesus is "the Son of
David, the Son of Abraham," meaning he is the one that was
promised to fulfill the David Covenant and the Abrahamic Covenant.
3) Only four women are mentioned in this genealogy (besides Mary):
1) Tamar, who pretended to be a prostitute to get her father-in-law
Judah (one of the 12 sons of Jacob that the tribe of Judah is named
after) to impregnate her; 2) Rahab, the harlot in Jericho that hid the 12 Jewish spies
before the walls of Jericho fell when Israel invaded Canaan, who was
also the great grandmother of King David; 3) Ruth, a Gentile woman
and the grandmother of King David, that the book of Ruth is about;
4) Bathsheba, who committed adultery with King David and he killed
her husband and married her, and she was the mother of Solomon.
4) At the end of the genealogy it says "Jacob begot Joseph the
husband of Mary," but it doesn't say that Joseph begot
Yeshua. It says Jesus was born of Mary, not Joseph, as the
last paragraph explains why. So this genealogy is actually the
genealogy of Yeshua's stepfather, Joseph. But it's still
important because Joseph was in the line of the Kings of Judah, and
as his stepson, Yeshua would have certain legal rights to the throne
of David. As Amos 9:11-12 describes, by the time of Jesus the
line of the Kings of Judah was in ruins. 11 “On that day I
will raise up The tabernacle[a] of David, which has fallen down,
And repair its damages; I will raise up its ruins, And rebuild it
as in the days of old; 12 That they may possess the remnant of
Edom, And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,” Says
the Lord who does this thing."
5) This is only a genealogy of Abraham to Jesus. The one of
Luke in the next section goes from Adam to Jesus.
Matthew 1
"1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David,
the Son of Abraham:
2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot
Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar,
Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4 Ram begot Amminadab,
Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 5 Salmon begot
Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6 and
Jesse begot David the king.
David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife[a]
of Uriah. 7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and
Abijah begot Asa.[b] 8 Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot
Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah. 9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot
Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh,
Manasseh begot Amon,[c] and Amon begot Josiah. 11 Josiah begot
Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to
Babylon.
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot
Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel begot
Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 14 Azor begot
Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. 15 Eliud begot
Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16 And
Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who
is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen
generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are
fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the
Christ are fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His
mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together,
she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her
husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public
example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he
thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared
to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid
to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you
shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their
sins.”
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the
virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call
His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of
the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not
know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.[d] And he
called His name Jesus."
PART 2 - The Genealogy of Yeshua in the Book of Luke
1) So that genealogy in Matthew was the geneology of Jesus's
stepfather, Joseph. The genealogy of his mother Mary is given
in the 3rd book in the New Testament, the book of Luke. This
genealogy goes all the way from Adam and Eve to Jesus.
2) This genealogy also carefully avoids calling Jesus the son of
Joseph. It says, "being AS WAS SUPPOSED [by
the public] the son of Joseph." "Son of" can
also mean "son-in-law of" (the term son was used for both) so we
assume this genealogy to be that of Mary since the one in Matthew is
of Joseph.
3) If Jesus was actually born physically of Joseph he could never be
Messiah because even though he would be in line legally to sit on
David's throne God pronounced a curse on Solomon's line, and Mary
came from David's son Nathan, not Solomon. Here's the curse at
the time of the last king of Israel, Jeconiah. 24 “As I
live, says the Lord, though Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim,
king of Judah, were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck
you off ... 29 O earth, earth, earth, Hear the word of the Lord!
30 Thus says the Lord: Write this man down as childless, A man who
shall not prosper in his days; For none of his descendants shall
prosper, Sitting on the throne of David, And ruling anymore in
Judah.”
Here's the genealogy from Luke in the New Testament:
Luke 3:23, "Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty
years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son
of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat,[d] the son of Levi, the son of
Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 25 the son of
Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the
son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, 27 the son of
Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of
Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi,
the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 29 the son of
Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,
